THREE excited Rockingham Senior High School basketball teams will be jetting out to Melbourne tomorrow to take part in a national tournament next week.
The under-17 boys’ and girls’ and under-15 boys’ teams will be shooting for gold medals after the school’s under-15 boys’ team won a silver medal in the competition last year.
A record 154 teams representing 70 schools will be taking part in the 2016 Australian Helloworld Schools Championships.
Basketball specialist co-ordinator Stephen Watson said the students had been training hard over the past nine weeks with help from former Rockingham Flames SBL player Ryan Jeffrey.
“The students have trained hard an hour a day and are very excited,” Mr Watson said.
It will be the 10th year that the school will be competing in the championships.
“This tournament will be the culmination of our specialist basketball program this year,” Mr Watson said.
“It is a round robin format with the finals starting on Wednesday afternoon.”
He said the Australian Institute of Sport sends scouts to the annual competition on the lookout for talented players.
Mr Watson has been co-ordinating the program this year and is a former Rockingham Senior High School student. He graduated in 2000.
