Cyclists are set to learn more about Perth’s Nyoongar history thanks to a free riding series steered by the State’s peak cycling body.

Led by Biboolmun Nyoongar man Joe Collard, WestCycle’s Beeloo Riding Series explores the Beeloo clan’s culture, language and history by cycling to significant places along the Swan and Canning rivers.

The Beeloo clan is a sub-group of the Whadjuk people and is one of the two clans who lived along the Canning River.

According to the City of Canning, Beeloo land spans from the Canning River to the Helena River.

Exploring areas from Derbarl Yerrigan (Perth Waters) to Dhangarro (Canning River), the family friendly riding series aims to also raise awareness of Aboriginal culture and heritage.

The rides will include bike skills activities and games.

“Last year we found being on bikes was a great way to leisurely take in an area and share our Nyoongar heritage and understanding of the land and water,” Mr Collard said.

“So we’re back on bikes this year to give folks the chance to soak up that ancient worldview, raise awareness of Aboriginal culture and ways to look after country so the next generation can enjoy it too.”

The series is delivered by WestCycle as part of the Department of Transport’s Annual Activation Program.

The Beeloo Series will continue each Saturday in April from 2pm to 4pm.
