Town of Cambridge launches 12-month e-scooter trial with Beam Mobility

Harriet FlinnPerthNow - Western Suburbs

Riders of hired e-scooters will be barred from the wooden coastal boardwalk in City Beach when a 12-month e-rideable trial begins in Town of Cambridge suburbs next Wednesday.

Riders will instead be redirected to scoot along Challenger Parade to get to and from beaches.

Cambridge mayor Gary Mack took one of the purple e-scooters for a test ride on Monday outside of Hamptons City Beach and said he hoped they would bring “enjoyment and fun for the community”.

“The e-scooters have become very popular around Perth and have now become part of people’s personal mobility,” Mr Mack said.

“Having the scooters around the town means people can now travel along the coastline, from City Beach all the way to Scarborough.”

It comes after a council meeting last December where town staff recommended Beam’s purple e-scooters be used during the year-long trial.

Having Beam run the trial means the same scooters can be ridden north along the coast from City Beach to locations such as Scarborough and North Beach, because the City of Stirling also uses Beam.

A total of 120 e-scooters and 50 seated e-scooters will be available across the town, costing from $0.45 per minute to hire on top of a $1 charge to unlock the device.

More than 20 parking spots have been added across Perth’s inner-west, including Peasholm Dog Beach, Floreat Beach and City Beach, enabling riders to access more of the coastal pathway.
