State Budget 2024: Ageing western suburbs bridge linking Claremont and Swanbourne to be replaced

Matt ZisPerthNow - Western Suburbs

The State Government has locked in the money to build a new crossing over the train line at Swanbourne and replace the century-old Congdon Street Bridge.

PerthNow can reveal the $38 million project will be given the green light when Treasurer Rita Saffioti hands down her first State Budget next Thursday, May 9.

And it can also confirm the much-needed upgrade will not change the bridge alignment that has linked Claremont and Swanbourne for 114 years.

Ms Saffioti said early designs for the modern crossing also include potential for future development on land near the bridge, given its closeness to Swanbourne train station.

A temporary bridge will be built further west so cars and pedestrians can continue to cross the rail line throughout the works, which is listed as taking three years.

The Congdon Street timber bridge was built in 1910 and despite its tired appearance remains a critical link today for residents, businesses, schools and commuters.

Main Roads WA statistics indicate it is used by more than 5000 vehicles each day.

Ms Saffioti said a new bridge was the best option and would also allow higher, necessary clearances for the rail line beneath.

“Many considerations were taken into account before determining the best solution for this project,” she said.

“The State Government has commissioned extensive detailed design work over the last few years, ensuring the new structure meets safety, access and design standards.

“A key component of this planning process has included feedback from the community and stakeholders during consultation for this project.”

Ms Saffioti said improvements would also be made to the paths for pedestrians and cyclists that run parallel to the rail lines on both sides of the bridge.

A start date for works has not been announced.
