Australian Dance Theatre tours with “Be Your Self”

Jill BurgessMandurah Coastal Times

Be Your Self explores the fundamental question about “self” using the body as the focus for the inquiry.

The result is a performance filled with dynamic vitality that is breathtaking to watch and stimulating to think about.

Celebrated choreographer Garry Stewart, most recently recognised as the inaugural recipient of the Australia Council Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance, said despite being a complicated subject, exploring ideas of identity and self was endlessly fascinating.

The work integrates contemporary dance, music, spoken word and video into an extraordinary, immersive experience.

Be Your Self has received accolades from around the globe and across Australia.

The Sydney Morning Herald described the show as “an exhilarating dance work”, the Daily Telegraph said it was a “slick multimedia production” with a cast that would “literally fling themselves into the physicality of the choreography”, and Crikey said there was no dance, theatre or dance-theatre company quite like it anywhere.

Under Garry Stewart, Australian Dance Theatre has built an international reputation for its distinctive style.

The dancers train in a number of physical disciplines from ballet and contemporary dance techniques through to gymnastics, ashtanga yoga, breakdance and martial arts.

The result is a fusion of forms, which constitutes a truly unique choreographic palette.
