Mr McFarlane was on a jump with the student, who was doing a solo training dive. Just after the jump, the student began to have a seizure. Mr McFarlane got close to the student, pulled his chute and was able to save his life.
Mr McFarlane received the gold cross at the Government House Ballroom on November 30.
Royal Life Saving Society WA chief executive Peter Leaversuch said each award recipient displayed exceptional courage, empathy and initiative by applying lifesaving skills in emergency situations and sometimes at risk to themselves.
