Bridge lift success

THE Mandurah Road Pedestrian Bridge was lifted into place on the weekend and should be ready for use next month.

The bridge arches were lifted over the train line and Mandurah Road, and set into place at the Mandurah Station.

While Saturday's windy weather was quite challenging, Sunday's weather provided perfect conditions for the contractors to lift the bridge into position over the road and rail line.

Finishing touches and minor works are currently being done to Mandurah's newest piece of community infrastructure before it is officially opened for public use in September.

Chief Executive Officer Mark Newman said the lift went according to plan and the City was very happy to see the arches now in place.

"We'd like to thank our contractors McConnell Dowell and sub-contractors for their smooth operation over the weekend," Mr Newman said.

"The City is really looking forward to officially opening the footbridge in the coming weeks so our community can start to reap the benefits of this safe access point."

Mr Newman thanked head contractors McConnell Dowell for utilising local companies including Cays Engineering to provide valuable input to the project, which included the highly complex engineering of three-dimensional arches instead of the normal two dimensions.

The City will keep the community updated as to when the bridge will be opened, and would like to thank people for their understanding and patience during the delivery of this project.

Mr Newman said the pedestrain bridge was a welcome addition to the transit-oriented Mandurah Junction development near the train station, and also a major benefit to the wider community.

The Pedestrian Bridge project received $5.4million in Federal Government funding through the Building Better Regional Cities program. Sixteen affordable housing units have already been delivered, and a further 34 will be built near the station as part of the funding agreement.
