A PETITION calling for a better hospital in the region has received more than 800 signatures.

Canning MHR Andrew Hastie is running the petition to send a message to the WA Government that Mandurah cannot be taken for granted.

He is calling for more funding and an upgrade of Peel Health Campus (PHC).

“It has been over 260 days since the Peel Health Rally where over 400 locals gathered to demand a better hospital for our growing city,” Mr Hastie said.

He said locals concerned about the hospital have kept count of the days since the rally, in an effort to pressure the WA state government into action.

Mr Hastie said the State Government’s latest investment in PHC represented less than 1.5 per cent of their total spend on hospitals in WA.

“Mandurah deserves better,” he said.

Acting Health Minster Dave Kelly said the State Government committed almost $10 million to Peel Health Campus last year.

“It’s in stark contrast to the Liberal National Government who had eight years in power and failed to make a single major investment in the hospital,” he said.

“It is laughable that Andrew Hastie has said the people of Mandurah can’t be taken for granted because that is exactly what the WA Liberals did.

“They made no investment in Peel Health Campus, had no plan for the region’s rapid population growth and invested no funds for the future health needs of its residents.

Mr Kelly said the State Government was changing that.

“The simple fact is WA Labor are doing all the heavy lifting looking after the health needs of the Peel residents and will continue to do so.”

Mandurah MLA David Templeman said Peel Health Campus needed major upgrading.

“I am lobbying hard to secure more funding from the State government and have so far fought and secured nearly $10 million to upgrade the Accident and Emergency area, increase parking capacity and other upgrades,” he said.

“But more funding is needed and I would welcome a major commitment from the Federal Government to a major upgrade for the hospital that would ultimately increase bed numbers and additional resources to cope with growing demand.”

Mr Hastie said he is working with Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt to secure federal support to improve services at the Peel Health Campus.
