CANNING MHR Andrew Hastie has announced he will push for road and rail network upgrades in the Peel region, ahead of the Federal Budget on May 8.

Mr Hastie said public infrastructure, particularly the local road and rail networks, should be upgraded to cope with rapid increase in population that the region had experienced over the past ten years.

“For too long the Peel region has been taken for granted.” Mr Hastie said.

“As a result, many of our transport networks have not kept up with the demands of its rapidly increasing population.

“That’s what I’ve been fighting for in Canberra over the past two years – projects like the Byford train station, the extension of the Tonkin Highway south, and the construction of a new train station in Lakelands are vital to the future of our region.

Mr Hastie said a more connected rail system would help reduce congestion, cut down time people spent commuting, and provide better access to job markets

“A better road network that incorporates an extended Tonkin Highway will improve safety and open up the local economy and better access to industry for heavy transport will encourage local business growth and in turn, create more job opportunities,” he said.

Mr Hastie said he was confident his advocacy for the region was being heard in Canberra.

“There’s been strong community support for these priorities across surveys, petitions and community forums,” Mr Hastie said.

“That’s really strengthened our cause in Canberra.

“I’ve lobbied key Ministers, invited members of the government visit the sites of key issues, and argued the case in Parliament.

“I’m hopeful that next month’s federal budget will contain good news for our region.”
