Coolup’s Wheeler Airfield overseer nominated for WA volunteering award

COOLUP resident Raalin Wheeler is a finalist in the Volunteering WA – WA Peoples Choice Spirit of Volunteering Awards 2017.

Mr Wheeler has been nominated for his ongoing commitment to keeping communities in the Peel region safe, through the construction, maintenance and management of Wheeler Airfield.

Used since 1997, the airfield is considered one of WA’s best emergency fuelling and water locations.

Wheeler Field played a critical part in supporting firefighting efforts during the devastating Yarloop bushfires in 2016, catering for 30 movements a day with a seven and a half minute turnaround.

Both Mr Wheeler and the airfield are seen as an asset to Shire of Murray residents, the greater Peel region and the South-West.

His forethought, vision and personal commitments have directly impacted many lives and saves countless homes, property and livestock over two decades.

The awards are determined by public vote and close on Sunday, April 30.
