Costly lesson for crab catcher

CATCHING 24 crabs cost a man $1975 when his case was heard in Mandurah Magistrates Court.

Ian David Russell-Brown gave an endorsed plea of guilty to possessing a totally protected fish.

Senior Fisheries officer Darren Harbord said Russell-Brown was at the Novara foreshore on February 8. He had 24 blue manna crabs, ranging in size from 112mm to 126mm.

Russell-Brown told fisheries officers he had planned to measure the crabs when he returned to his car.

He told officers he did not know there was a bag limit of 10 crabs per person.

Russell-Brown was fined $650, must pay a mandatory $1100 penalty and $225 in costs.
