Dolphin rescue attempts thwarted

Vanessa SchmittMandurah Coastal Times

AN operation to free a Mandurah dolphin from fishing line is proving a difficult task.

Luca, an 18-month-old dolphin, has fishing line caught on her dorsal.

Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions staff and Estuary Guardians Mandurah volunteers have been trying to disentangle Luca for the past two weeks.

“Unfortunately his mum is preventing all efforts to get close enough at the moment,” an Estuary Guardians spokeswoman said.

“Huge efforts are being made to help him.”

The spokeswoman said Luca is still fit and is swimming fast.

“We are working with volunteer groups in the area to develop strategies to capture the animal,” she said.

“We ask that members of the public do not attempt to capture the dolphin, as doing so could result in injuries to themselves and the dolphin.”

Members of the public have helped track Luca’s movements through the Estuary Guardians Facebook page.
