IF the title of the wonderfully life-affirming play You Know We Belong Together sounds familiar, it is.
It is the theme song from TV soapie Home and Away, the show on which the play’s star Julia Hales dreams of appearing.
You Know We Belong Together is back by popular demand after its world premier in Perth in March last year as part of the Perth Festival.
Hales, who has lived with Down Syndrome for her 38 years of life, has watched Home and Away since it first aired in the 1980s.
The play opens on an empty stage.
Hales enters, introducing a sign language interpreter and the action speeds up as more cast members, most with Down Syndrome gather on stage and join her to discuss their hopes and dreams in an imaginary reproduction of the Summer Bay diner.
They are sensitive, open and often very funny.
The play is backed by action on a big screen and the final clip is of a scene in Summer Bay with actor Ray Meagher and Hales on the Home and Away set.
It is a heart warming, moving, entertaining and very professional production and it was easy to leap to our feet for the standing ovation at the end.
There’s only a few days before the season closes so try not to miss it.
