A NEW tourist venture featuring three BBQ-Donut boats operating from the eastern foreshore has been given the green light by City of Mandurah.
Council granted conditional approval to the venture after Innospring Pty Ltd asked for a 12 month trial with a further 12 months should it be successful.
The hire and drive boating business is based on a noise and emission-free and solar cell-powered cruiser with solar electric propulsion and offers a unique experience to diners floating around Mandjar Bay.
Mandurah Boat and Hire objected to the venture on the grounds of loss of customers and income, as did Gloria Jeans and the Merchant Tea Room which cited concerns about a lack of public toilets and disorderly conduct.
Most tourist businesses in the area supported the proposal claiming it would bring more people to the area, although some were concerned at the loss of a public jetty.
Should the jetty not be accessible due to construction of the new traffic bridge and the eastern foreshore seawall, the boats could operate in front of the Stage Door Restaurant during those periods.
