Dudley Park man (23) charged over alleged role in Smart St Mall brick attack

POLICE have charged a 23-year-old Dudley Park man over his role in an alleged serious assault in Smart Street Mall where a group of men threw bricks at a man and woman, leaving them with serious injuries.

The man was charged with unlawful act with intent to harm and was refused bail to appear in Perth Magistrates Court today .

Police said about 1.30am on Tuesday in Smart Street Mall a group of men started fighting with a 27-year-old man.

Two of the men from the group allegedly picked up bricks from a nearby garden bed and threw them at the victim, hitting him in the head and causing him to fall over while another man attempted to punch him.

A short time later a woman in her 20s ran to assist and was struck with in the head with a brick.

Both victims went to Peel Health Campus for treatment; the woman suffered a fractured skull and the man received minor injuries including a head wound that required staples.

Police claim an incident inside a nearby nightclub may have provoked the attack.

Police believe at the time of the assault, a large group of people in the area may have witnessed the assault.

“There were lots of people in the area at the time so we urge anyone with any information to please come forward,” Detective Constable Darcy Maher said.
