City seeks to name Dudley Park reserve in honour of much-loved environmentalist

THE City of Mandurah wants to name a Dudley Park reserve in honour of a local environmentalist and volunteer.

It wants Landgate to name a reserve in Sharperton Meander as the Shirley Joiner Reserve.

The reserve holds environmental significance with an endangered flora species and is in what was Mrs Joiner’s home suburb.

The City said there had been overwhelming support for the naming proposal.

Mrs Joiner was Mandurah Australia Day Active Citizen of the Year in 2014 and died in 2017.

Mrs Joiner was secretary of Peel Preservation Group for many years and a tireless worker and campaigner for local environment groups such as Mandurah Environmental Advisory Group and Friends of Rivers Peel.

She was also a member of Mandurah Uniting Church, for which she volunteered for 16 years, a foundation member of Uniting Outreach Mandurah and the Rainbow Program, and ran the opportunity shop.
