RSPCA WA inspectors were at the scene to capture and rescue as many chickens as possible.

RSPCA WA spokesperson Anne Gabriel said approximately 100 chickens died following the accident.

“19 severely injured chickens that were deemed unfit to travel were brought back by the RSPCA WA Inspectors to our animal care centre in Malaga,” Ms Gabriel said.

“These chickens will receive medical care and examination at our vet clinic,” she said.

The RSPCA will investigate how the chickens were being transported, as it is illegal to transport animals in a manner that may cause harm.

It is not known how many chickens managed to cross the road following the accident.
