The St John Ambulance WA Volunteer of the Year Awards were held at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The awards recognise individuals for their dedication and commitment.

St John chief executive Tony Ahern said volunteers were vital in the provision of WA’s ambulance service.

“Irene has been a committed supporter of the St John Museum for 21 years and in addition to her role in research, filing, and guiding visitors, she is also the cornerstone of the St John heritage group,” he said.

When the museum was re-established as the Ian Kaye-Eddie Heritage Centre in 2006, Irene voluntarily worked for two months to help clean, unpack and display the memorabilia.

She now attends the centre on a weekly basis, travelling more than 200km a round trip.
