DENISE Garcia and Lola Givers have much to be thankful for when they celebrate International Day of Friendship on July 30.

The pair have become fast friends since meeting at Mercy Place Mandurah two years ago, a friendship Ms Givers said had grown quickly despite their many differences.

“Denise and I are very different, I have never left Western Australia and she has travelled the world, plus Denise is the loud one and I’m quiet,” she said.

“But even though we’re very different we have lots of similarities and it’s lovely to have a close friend living here.

“We spend most of the day together, and I think we’d both be lost without each other.”

Ms Garcia said their 14 year age gap had proved no barrier to their bond.

“Lola and I spend most of our days together, and our friendship is very special to both of us,” she said.

“In fact we’ve also become close to each other’s relatives and in many ways Lola’s family feels like my family, and mine hers, when her family comes in and brings meals, I’m always included which is just lovely.”

International Day of Friendship is a United Nations initiative that aims to show how friendships between people, countries and cultures can inspire peace and build bridges between communities.
