Jesse’s diagnosis last October came as ‘a huge shock’ to the Fortune family.

‘Jesse was continually thirsty and going to the toilet a lot, she would have mood swings, was continually hungry and lost a lot of weight,’ Zillah said.

‘She ended up in intensive care at Princess Margaret Hospital.’

Jesse’s diagnosis resulted in the family developing a passion for raising awareness of diabetes and fundraising in the hopes of supporting research that may lead to a cure.

‘Jesse receives four insulin needles a day and has to do a finger prick test at least eight times a day,’ Zillah said.

‘This will probably increase and it’s a big responsibility for a little girl.’

David and Zillah both had a fundraising target of $500 each, at this stage David has raised $550 and Zillah $1240.

The whole family changed their eating habits after Jesse’s diagnosis, making their diet healthier.

‘David and I take turns getting up in the middle of the night to check Jesse’s bloods,’ Zillah said.
