Halls Head man (69) fined $1800 for 19 cannabis plants and oil

A 69-year-old man was fined $1800 after Mandurah detectives found 19 cannabis plants at his Halls Head property.

Gary James Kennedy pleaded guilty to cultivating cannabis and possessing cannabis oil when he appeared in Mandurah Magistrates Court today .

Police prosecutor Tamara Read said police searched Kennedy’s house on January 15 and found 250mL of cannabis oil in the kitchen.

She said police also found 19 cannabis plants, 50cm to 3m tall, in the process of being cultivated.

Duty lawyer Clare Hay said the cannabis was for medicinal purposes and for Kennedy’s personal use.

She said Kennedy had health issues and he had tried other methods and cannabis was the only thing that helps him.

Ms Hay said Kennedy would not be using cannabis again.

Magistrate Anne Longden said Kennedy did suffer from ill-health.

“You are going to have to find alternative methods in dealing with your issue,” she said.

Kennedy must pay $205 in costs.
