Students went to the Maritime Museum in Fremantle where each school adopted a whale shark and will track it as it moves around the world.
Participants will work with scientists to uncover the migration, behaviour and habits of whale sharks, which is vital information for the survival of this species.
John Tonkin College specialist surf science students were excited to take part in the unique and hands-on program.
Students from years 7 to 10 can take the class and study the marine environment.
Greenfields Primary School is also adopting a whale shark.
The project is the first time students have had the chance to join in scientific research about the whale shark, while talking with scientists and learning about WAs marine environment.
