High speed police pursuit ends in jail

A HIGH speed police chase from Mandurah to Lakelands resulted in a jail term for the driver of a stolen vehicle.

Michael Joseph Cassidy pleaded guilty to a range of offences including reckless driving, no authority to drive and stealing a motor vehicle.

Cassidy’s case was heard in Mandurah Magistrates Court via video link from Casuarina Prison.

Police prosecutor Tamara Read said police saw Cassidy driving a stolen Suzuki on Eacott Street, near Park Road in Mandurah on February 2.

She said police activated their emergency lights and Cassidy accelerated away and failed to stop.

Cassidy continued to evade police for 30 minutes, sometimes reaching speeds of 150km/h, driving on the wrong side of the road and he drove with the lights off.

Police airwing were called to assist and Cassidy abandoned the vehicle in Lakelands.

Cassidy was sentenced to one year imprisonment, was fined $3000 and his drivers licence was disqualified for life.
