In The Next Room or The Vibrator Play: Hilarity at the State Theatre

In The Next Room or The Vibrator Play: Hilarity at the State Theatre

IN the 1800s hysteria was a common medical diagnosis for women.

In his Victorian home, Dr Givings has pioneered a new device for treating the condition – and so begins the history of the vibrator.

In The Next Room or The Vibrator Play, electricity has just arrived and the story takes place in the consulting room of Dr Givings who specialises in treating hysteria and the adjacent parlour where his wife Catherine is trying to deal with recent motherhood and her husband’s failure to notice her feelings of neglect.

She seeks the companionship of his patients including a new patient and her husband who bring a wet nurse into the household along with their own complicated relationship.

Catherine soon discovers the truth about what goes on in the next room, leading to some of the funniest scenes.

It is a confronting play, but very, very funny, with great performances from all, particularly Tom Stokes as frustrated artist Leo, backed up by a sumptuous stand out set.

The Next Room or the Vibrator Play was nominated for three Tony Awards and a Pulitzer,

There is also a display of antique vibrators in the foyer.
