This year’s Stretch Festival opening is based on the Mandurah waterways, right on our doorstep.

Elisa Dumitru and Jeff Funnell are two of the local creators behind the show.

While Dumitru is the choreographer for more than 20 people, Funnel works with his guitar, ukulele and friend Steve to create the hour-long soundtrack.

‘I felt called to Mandurah about 10 years ago,” Dumitru said. ‘For me, the water speaks of new life.

‘For this project, I was really excited to be involved with the community and the people of Mandurah, to work artistically with people who might not necessarily be artists.’

‘Something I feel that represents Mandurah, that creativity can be found in the hearts of every man, woman and child.

‘Anybody can be a part of it.’

For Jess Funnell, the inspiration for the music came from the water itself.

‘There is such a fantastic story behind our waterways and the music needs to capture that,” he said.

‘Everyone can relate to the foreshore.’

Dance, Fire and Drifting opens the festival on April 19 on the eastern foreshore.
