WHAT’S up with all the clowns everywhere? Unless you’re still using dial up internet or you’re a performing clown yourself, you have probably seen the clown craze sweeping Australia.
So why are people dressing as clowns?
It’s a meme come to life.
A meme is classified as an element of a culture or system of behaviour passed from one individual to another by imitation or other non-genetic means. People who spend too much time on the internet have seen the clown craze and decided to cause a little hysteria themselves.
A company is using the clowns to market their product. Whether that product is squeaky shoes or a Halloween themed party. This video from America was actually a marketing campaign for a haunted house.
It probably isn’t a viral marketing campaign for the film IT though.
The King of Horror himself has asked fans to cool it on the clown stuff. The clown sightings are probably just a social media fad.
Google “clown videos youtube” and there is a plethora of found-footage style horror movies to watch. They range from the genuinely horrific to the comical.
What is definite is that people are genuinely terrified of clowns.
Coulrophobia: is the fear of clowns, but isn’t considered an actual psychological disorder. Many social media users have threatened violence if a clown approaches them on the streets.
