Local florists gear up for Valentine’s Day surprises

Vanessa SchmittMandurah Coastal Times

VALENTINE’S Day is one of the busiest days for florists around the region.

Donna McGroarty, from Wicked Lilly in Falcon, said they sold about 2400 floral arrangements on the loved-up day.

She will put on six extra staff tomorrow: four additional staff in the shop and two extra delivery drivers.

This year sales figures are expected to be down as residents scale back their purchases.

“It’s the economy in Mandurah,” she said.

“People might buy a single rose instead of a bouquet.

“Most people spend between $50 to $150 on flowers.”

The amorous were more generous a few years ago; one man forked out $400 on an extravagant floral arrangement.

Valentine’s Day can also be fascinating for florists, as secret loves are revealed.

Ms McGroarty said one man ordered flowers for his wife and mistress.

Despite staff being discrete, the man was nervous about getting caught out.

One lucky lady received three lots of flowers from multiple suitors.
