Long-time Murray councillor presented Eminent Service Award

LONG-time Murray Shire councillor Chris Thompson has been awarded an Eminent Service Award in recognition of her contribution to the community.

Cr Thompson was elected in 1986 and served one of the longest continuous terms as a Murray councillor.

During her 31-year tenure, she served 16 years as deputy shire president and held positions on numerous boards and committees including 17 years as chair of the Local Emergency Management Committee.

She is a JP, national bronze and disability swimming coach and president of West Murray Community Centre, a past president of Pinjarra Swimming Club and Peel Aquatic Club and a past member of the Children’s Court of WA.

Shire president Maree Reid said Cr Thompson’s leadership, particularly in emergency management was second to none and her experience and strength shone through when she performed the role of Recovery Coordinator for the Dwellingup fires in 2007.

“Cr Thompson’s commitment to the Murray community has been nothing short of outstanding,’’ she said.
