Magistrate’s tall order

The court heard James Raymond Nathaniel McMahen used insulting and abusive language toward corrections staff while completing the order.

The community order related to more than 29 offences committed by McMahen.

Magistrate Vivien Edwards told McMahen that he was the one who agreed to the order.

"The staff are there to assist you; to behave in the manner you did was utterly unacceptable," she said.

McMahen agreed that his attitude was unacceptable.

Magistrate Edwards said she had taken a week to decide McMahen's punishment.

For driving under a fines suspension, McMahen received a $500 fine, for driving an unlicensed car he received a $200 fine and for trespassing he received a $600 fine.

For the other 24 charges he received a seven-month jail sentence, suspended for a year.

For breaching his community order he received a global fine of $800.
