FISHING with a net in South Yunderup cost a man more than $900 when he appeared in Mandurah Magistrates Court this morning.
Blair Ashley Wootton pleaded guilty to fished by means of a fishing net without a current Recreational Fishing Licence specifying he can use a net and contravening a provision of an order.
Department of Fisheries prosecutor Dean Gregory said officers received a report of someone using a net to fish near the Batavia Quays boat ramp on November 12.
Fisheries officers attended and watched Wootton catch two taylor, 21 mullet and a herring in the net.
Mr Gregory said the South Yunderup waters were permanently closed to net fishing and Wootton did not have licence to fish with a net.
Wootton said he did not know they were closed waters at the time.
Magistrate Anne Longden said ignorance of the law was not a defence.
Wootton was fined $500, he must pay $205 in costs and an additional $232 penalty. Ms Longden ordered the forfeiture of the net and fish.
