WORK has started on the long-awaited Mandjar Square redevelopment.
The public open space between Mandurah Performing Arts Centre, Reading Cinemas and the Boardwalk provides space for events and activities and a link between the Boardwalk and Mandurah Ocean Marina.
The infrastructure and landscape treatments in the area have deteriorated over the past 20 years and now need upgrading.

The $2 million project will be undertaken in four stages.
Stage 1 will take around eight weeks and include underground services, water and power, and improvements to lighting and pavements.
Work already started included stormwater demolition work and improvements to existing stormwater infrastructure.
Once work is completed, the area will be fully reinstated in time for the Stretch Arts Festival on May 6 and 7.
After the festival, the second part of Stage 1 will include the removal of lighting, bollards, paving and timber decking around the trees, water and electrical services and the installation of new lighting, paving and a grassed area.
Work is limited to the existing paved area.
There will be provision for pedestrian access at all times but vehicles will be unable to access the area.
City of Mandurah is working with surrounding businesses to minimise any inconvenience.
