MANDURAH Coastal Times editor Vanessa Schmitt and photographer Jon Hewson visited Greenfields Primary School on Thursday .

Teacher Kathryn Boocock said Year 1 students would be learning how to write stories this term.

“I am trying to find ways for our students to connect their writing with the real world,” she said.

“I thought having the opportunity for our students to be able to hear from and talk to a local writer from our community newspaper would be an amazing way for them to connect their writing to the real world.”

Mrs Schmitt spoke about the importance of spelling, grammar and story structure when writing news stories.

Students learnt about the newspaper masthead, headings and subheadings.

They also looked at examples of articles from events that had happened in the community.

Mr Hewson asked students about photos they had taken and shared what he enjoyed about photography.
