Mandurah jobseekers take to road side with signs in quest to find work

The friends, from South Yunderup and North Yunderup, stood on a Pinjarra Road verge on Thursday and Friday with their “work wanted” signs.

Both were offered work for a week, starting Tuesday, and they plan to go back to their public appeal for work when that work finishes.

“I’ve gone from $2500 a week to standing in the middle of the road with a sign,” Mr Cook said.

“I was in mining for eight years and got out two years ago.

“I had to sell my house because I was overcommitted.

“My last two jobs were slow. I’ve been able to get work for a couple of days here and there.”

Mr Cook is a qualified sign writer and has been trying to set up his own business. He had also done concreting and carpentry.

Mr Tipper said it was demoralising standing on the side of the road, but they were desperate for work.

“I am an operator, but I’m happy to do anything,” he said.

“I have a wife, a three-year-old daughter and a mortgage.

“I’ve applied for 150 jobs but it’s so quiet in town.”

Mr Tipper said there had been lots of beeps and toots from passing motorists, but no offers for work. The men have been friends for 25 years and have truck licences.
