Mandurah murder: accused begs to be allowed out on bail

MANDURAH murder accused Damian Eric Maxfield (38) begged to be allowed out on bail when he appeared in Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court this morning.

Mr Maxfield is accused of the murder of 40-year-old Scott Martin and attempting to unlawfully kill 32-year-old Erelle Mason.

He appeared via videolink from Hakea Prison and pleaded for Magistrate Jan Whitbread to release him from prison on compassionate grounds.

Ms Whitbread told Mr Maxfield that she is a magistrate and does not have jurisdiction.

Mr Maxfield was not represented in court and Ms Whitbread told him his lawyer Steven Shadgett would have to apply to the Supreme Court for his release due to the seriousness of the charges.

He claimed Mr Shadgett had not answered phone calls this morning.

Mr Maxfield has still not pleaded to the charges and will reappear on February 22.
