Mandurah: significant tuart tree put on City register

Jill BurgessMandurah Coastal Times

CITY of Mandurah has placed on its significant tree register a tuart on private property at Greenfields.

The tree is estimated to be more than 150 years old and is significant for its height, spread and age, and because it can be viewed from a public street.

Neighbouring property owners were advised of the possible listing, which they supported because the tree was in keeping with the lifestyle and intent of the location and they loved the wildlife that made the tree their home.

Tuart trees of similar age and size are becoming rarer in Mandurah, particularly on private property, according to a council report.

“The tree stands tall and straight among its peers, providing important food and habitat for a host of fauna,’’ the report said.

However, director of planning Tony Free pointed out that listing did not mean a listed tree could not be pruned or removed.
