Jill BurgessMandurah Coastal Times

MEADOW Springs resident Ahmed Zilani plans to go on a 12-hour hunger strike to put pressure on the State Government to build the Lakelands train station.

Mr Zilani plans to go without food and drink between 9am to 9pm on Saturday, July 13 in front of the Red Rooster store on the eastern foreshore.

He said he had been campaigning for the station for a long time and it was close to his heart.

Initially, Mr Zilani considered organising a rally but changed his mind due to unpredictable weather conditions and will go on a 12-hour fast instead.

He claimed the council was sitting on the sidelines and watching events which was not acceptable.

“The council must provide leadership, come on board and lead this issue,’’ he said..

Mr Zilani hopes the community will show their support by stopping by to say hello during his hunger strike.

One comment on his Facebook page said the Karnup station would be built first and Lakelands later.

Another said the issue was not really worth starving himself for.

Mr Zilani stood as a North Ward candidate in the last City of Mandurah local government elections, but did not win.

Mandurah MLA David Templeman said he supported a station at Lakelands.

He said the State Government would deliver on its election promise for a station at Karnet and a business case was being developed for a station at Lakelands.
