Murray and Waroona shires hosting community forums to establish support and inclusion of older people

SEVERAL community forums will be held across Murray and Waroona from in early June to help establish communities supportive and inclusive of older people.

Murray Shire president Maree Reid said with the increasing percentage of seniors and the inevitability of ageing, factors enabling people to remain safe, health and happy needed planning and understanding.

“Residents, service providers and carers are encouraged to attend the community forums to share their thoughts and experiences on how Murray and Waroona communities can assist seniors,” said Cr Reid.

Several forums have already taken place.

The final forums are at Yunderup Sport and Recreation Club today from 2pm-5pm, tomorrow at St John Ambulance Training Room, Dwellingup from 4pm-6pm and Coolup Community Hall on Thursday from 10.30am-12.30pm.

Topics for discussion include outdoor spaces and buildings, transportation, housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, volunteering and employment, communication and information and community health and services.

A survey from the Shire of Murray’s website and through the Shire of Waroona’s website will help identify age friendly priority projects and areas of focus for each Shire for the period 2016-2020.

An Age Friendly Communities Working Group has also been established to further advocate for the Age Friendly Communities Plan in the communities.

The group will provide recommendations and feedback for the development, implementation, ongoing monitoring and review of the plan.
