No third rubbish bin for Mandurah residents

Jill BurgessMandurah Coastal Times

MANDURAH residents will not have a third rubbish bin for the time being.

The State Government’s Waste Authority is providing $20 million under the Better Bins Program to support local government in introducing best practice kerbside collection systems that include a three-bin collection system.

The third bin would be for organic/green waste, removing it from the mainstream waste disposal service.

However, according to the council, the funding at first glance appeared attractive to local government but did not fully cover the costs of implementing the third bin and would result in higher refuse rates for the community.

The introduction of a third bin would create a number of issues needing effective management and would add about $50 to a household refuse rate.

Mandurah is also a member of the Rivers Regional Council and has entered into a contract with it and Phoenix Energy to supply all waste material to the facility.

The City of Rockingham is going ahead with the third bin system.

Mayor Barry Sammels said it allowed for greater recycling which reduced the amount of waste filling up landfill.
