IT might be a case of third time lucky for Ocean Road Primary School principal Dean Finlay at a prestigious annual award.

Mr Finlay is a finalist in the WA Primary Principal of the Year category at this year’s WA Education Awards, recognised alongside the principals of Balingup, Baynton West and Thornlie primary schools.

He has made the final four in this category twice before in 2014 and 2015, but Mr Finlay said he was just humbled by the nomination.

“It’s a real honour, the community puts this in so it’s an honour to be recognised by the community,” he said.

“Because I’ve been here for that amount of time we’ve been about to create this culture where the school is a community.

“There’s a strong sense of community that involves the kids, the staff, the parents and volunteers-they all feel like they’re a part of it.”

After 12 years at the helm he said he loved shaping the young minds and futures of the more than 600 students at the Dawesville based school and that he was always striving to improve his own personal growth, recently starting a doctorate at the University of NSW.

“I had this strong commitment to become a principal to make sure that my beliefs on how schools should be and how we should look after kids is being catered for,” he said.

“My ethos is we do what’s best for the kids, all our decisions are made around that.

“In terms of staff it’s about building their capacity so we create the next generation of leaders.”

Education and Training minister Sue Ellery said the awards were a fantastic way to thank educators for the knowledge, dedication and the endless opportunities they create for young people in WA.

Winners will be announced on October 28.
