Peel given raw deal on royalties funds: Cowper

Staff ReporterMandurah Coastal Times

Mr Cowper claimed Peel had received less than $60 million since the funding began in 2008.

He said the sum was well below the amount allocated to other regions, including the Gascoyne ($136m) Goldfields-Esperance ($162m), Midwest ($178m), Great Southern ($188m), South West ($221m), Kimberley ($513m) and Pilbara ($887m).

‘For some unexplained reason, the Peel received only $18 million in 2012/13, while the Pilbara enjoyed $375 million, the Wheatbelt $77 million and the Great Southern $65 million.

Mr Cowper said the Peel continued to ‘punch well above its weight’ in commercial terms, but had long overdue needs for amenities and infrastructure.

‘These needs have already been identified and range from an aged care facility in Harvey, a new hospital for Pinjarra, a major new industrial development at Nambeelup to provide work for 20,000, sporting facilities such as the proposed Coolup equestrian centre and a new state motorcycle park at Pinjarra,” he said.
