Peel Health Campus reviews security policies in wake of former security guard Shaun David Fairfield’s conviction for sexual assault against 15yo girl

PEEL Health Campus chief executive Margaret Sturdy said the hospital has reviewed its security policies and procedures after a former security guard was found guilty of four counts of sexual assault against a 15-year-old girl.

Shaun David Fairfield was found guilty after a trial last week.

He stood accused of five counts of indecent dealing with a child and two counts of sexual penetration of a child.

The court heard the girl was a patient at the Peel Health Campus in May 2014, when Fairfield who was a Campus security guard, committed the acts against her.

“A full investigation into our security process was made at the time,” Dr Sturdy said.

“We had a good security system in place including CCTV coverage at the hospital.

“However, since the incident we have put further measures in place to ensure the safety of our patients and staff.”

Fairfield took the girl, a mental health patient, outside of the hospital’s emergency department.

Dr Sturdy said Fairfield was stood down as soon as the allegations were made in 2014.

“Our thoughts go out to the victim and the victim’s family”.

Fairfield will be sentenced on July 1.
