Peel tourism gets Royalties for Regions funding boost

Jill BurgessMandurah Coastal Times

TWO new Royalties for Regions grants for Mandurah and Peel Tourist Organisation will enable the tourist body to apply for more high yielding events and create more new destination footage and imagery.

The $88,900 funding received from the latest round of the Regional Grants Scheme and the Community Chest Fund will be used to develop a regional digital asset library and to bid for significant national and international events.

“In the past we’ve been limited to the number of events we can bid for and the grant funding will enable us to expand the quality of frequency of event bids in what is a very competitive environment, ’’MAPTO chief executive Karen Priest said.

Tourism is a significant driver in the Peel, contributing more than $400 million per annum to the economy.

The recently released Tourism Works Atlas revealed 1080 tourism businesses operating in the Peel and about 2560 Peel residents employed in the tourism industry.

Ms Priest said the ability to commission new photography and video footage would benefit not only leisure marketing but help the new strategic focus on business and sports events.

“Bidding for these is a costly and competitive business but once they are secured for the region, the economic stimulus is felt by many suppliers and staff across the front line and supporting hospitality sectors,’’ she said.
