FREE fitness and nutrition assessments are being offered in Pinjarra in response to a finding from Australia’s Health Tracker last November that showed Pinjarra to be the “fattest” town in Australia.
According to the online survey, 76 per cent of Pinjarra residents are overweight or obese.
Primary health service provider 360 Health + Community has stepped in and is offering the services of an accredited practicing dietitian and an accredited exercise physiologist who will work from offices in both Pinjarra and Mandurah.
The 360 Health team not only carry out assessments, but also help clients create workable plans for a healthier lifestyle.
360 Health + Community is making the services available despite the removal of state funding for the services in Pinjarra last year.
Chief executive Paul Hersey said there was a clear and urgent need for more to be done to help the Pinjarra community.
“As a social enterprise organisation, we have some discretion about where we can give back and we believe that Pinjarra is one such situation,’’ he said.
“High levels of obesity in a particular area are often associated with a complex web of issues, including unemployment or low income, isolation, diabetes and mental health.
“We see our role as more than simply showing people how to eat healthier and get fitter.
“We can also show clients how to access the support available from other health and social organisations, so they get the integrated assistance they need.”
