PEEL Youth Medical Services (PYMS) and GP Down South are on a mission to get a headspace in Mandurah.

There is a headspace in Rockingham, but according to PYMS spokeswoman Eleanor Britton its health hub would be the ideal location for one in Mandurah.

The health providers started a petition to alert the Federal Government to the need for a headspace in Mandurah.

“A local headspace will increase mental health services for youth in our region – this is what our community have been asking for,” Ms Britton said.

“One of the few limitations of the headspace model has been a lack of co-ordinated GP support for the client.

“By locating headspace in the PYMS Health Hub, headspace will be supported by a youth friendly GP service-Peel Youth Medical Service and also have a co-ordinated and integrated wraparound service provided by the other co-locators of the facility.”

Ms Britton said the PYMS health hub with a collocated headspace would give young people an integrated model of care.

“We need to address mental, social and physical health together, not in isolation,” she said.

“We started the petition to let the community know that there is something that we can do to address the incredibly high rates of mental health and suicide amongst our youth.”

According to Ms Britton, the Federal Government is about to announce 10 headspace facilities around Australia.

The Mandurah health providers would like to be one of these locations.

“We have provided formal submissions to the Government and believe that the needs of our region can’t be ignored, especially if we can demonstrate public support for a full headspace for Mandurah and Peel,” she said.

“I don’t feel our region is being ignored, but it must be understood we are a region with unique needs and are in no way part of metropolitan Perth.

“Outreaching health services to Peel from other regions is not a solution – we need our own and dedicated health services in Peel.”

Headspace is the National Youth Mental Health Foundation that provides early intervention mental health services to 12 to 25-year-olds.

It covers mental health, physical health, work and study support and alcohol and other drug services.
