THERE will be a strong police presence at designated Leavers Zones.
Thousands of school leavers are expected to celebrate Leavers Week from November 23 in Dunsborough and on Rottnest Island.
Additional police will be heading to both destinations along with the students, including traffic officers, dog handlers for drug detection, water police and local policing officers.
Commander Jon Tuttle said that while there was a strong police presence, the focus of this activity would be on the Leavers enjoying their transition from being school students to young adults.
“One important message we always have for Leavers is to look after yourself, and look after your mates,” he said.
“This should be a time in your life that you can look back on with good memories, not regrets.”
He added that parents had an important role to play both in the lead-up to, and during the week.
“We know that there will be many Leavers who will consider drinking alcohol or using illicit drugs for the first time.
“Parents need to be on the front foot and have the important discussion about the dangers associated with that,” Commander Tuttle said.
