The funding will contribute to the refurbishment and extension of the Yunderup Sport and Recreation Club and the construction of the third oval at the Sir Ross McLarty precinct.

‘The Yunderup Sport and Recreation Club refurbishment and construction of the third Sir Ross McLarty Oval are high priority projects for the Shire of Murray, expected to be completed by 2015,’chief executive Dean Unsworth said.

‘We are hopeful that our grant applications will be successful, however we won’t know any outcomes until January 2014.’

The Shire has been identified as one of the fastest growing communities in WA and as a result there has been an increase in demand for community sporting facilities.

‘South Yunderup is a major growth area of the Shire; the club has always been an important part of our community,’ he said.

‘The upgraded Yunderup facility will cater for the current population size as well as the predicted increase.’

Council recently allocated $475,000 to the refurbishment of the Yunderup facility at the recent August meeting, on top of the Shire’s $500,000 of Royalties for Regions funding already allocated to the project.

The total cost is expected to be more than $2.2 million.

Funding is being sought from both Department of Sport and Recreation, as well as Lotterywest for the non-sport community additions.

Construction on the Sir Ross McLarty third oval will start in 2014, provided the remaining funding from the Department of Sport and Recreation is secured.

The project is in partnership with the Department of Education.
