Public help after elderly woman’s handbag stolen

MANDURAH Detectives and Mandurah Local Policing Team officers have charged an 18-year-old man in relation to an incident yesterday afternoon , in which an 86-year-old woman's handbag was stolen.

At about 2.50pm, a woman was pushing a shopping trolley in the car park of the Mandurah Forum Shopping Centre when she was followed by a man who reached into her trolley and stole her handbag.

The offender ran from the scene, being chased by members of the public, and dumped the handbag in a nearby skip bin as he ran. The handbag and all its contents were recovered and returned to the woman.

The woman attended the Mandurah Police Station and reported the incident.

Mandurah Local Policing Team officers attended the shopping centre, and with the assistance of security staff identified a person of interest. The information was handed over to Mandurah Detectives and at about 5.20pm, a search warrant was executed at a residence on Steerforth Drive, Coodanup, and a man was arrested.

An 18-year-old Greenfields man was charged with breach of bail and stealing.

He was refused bail and is due to appear in the Perth Magistrates Court today.
