Regional model to help needy

The Peel Community Development Group and Peel Development Commission initiative was developed by Shelter WA in partnership with local stakeholders and proposes a regional model for housing, employment and education to help people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

Advisory committee chairwoman Sue Fyfe said the model was a key milestone in attracting the funding needed to build more housing for people in need.

Dr Fyfe said homelessness had been a significant problem in the Peel region for a long time.

The identification of housing models and concept drawings have also been completed.

Shelter WA executive officer Chantal Roberts said the new model recognised that solutions to homelessness needed to be built from the ground up.

She said it was essential to respond to the specific needs in a community.

The strategy was launched by Peel Community Development Group chairwoman Paddi Creevey.
