Reserve named after ‘eco-warrior’

A CROWD of family, friends and community members turned out for the naming of Shirley Joiner Reserve in Dudley Park.

Ms Joiner was a pillar of the community and a passionate eco-warrior.

Along with her environmental work with Peel Preservation Group and the Mandurah Environmental Advisory Group, she volunteered with multiple community outreach programs.

In 2014 she was awarded the Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizen Award for the initiation of the Rainbow Project through the Mandurah Uniting Church.

Mandurah Deputy Mayor Caroline Knight said Ms Joiner was a special person.

“So is this reserve,” she said.

The reserve is home to the endangered Red-tailed Black Cockatoos as well as Southern Brown Bandicoots.

Ms Joiner passed away in 2017 after a battle with illness.
