AREAS of the Murray Shire are sparkling after clean-up day events in Coolup, Pinjarra, South Yunderup, Ravenswood and Dwellingup.

Volunteers fished 13 shopping trolleys and a bike out of the Murray River downstream of the suspension bridge and filled 15 waste bags with rubbish collected from Cantwell Park.

A further five clean up events included the annual Waterways Clean-Up celebrating its 14th anniversary.

Efforts mainly concentrated on the removal of rubbish from the Murray and Serpentine Rivers, adjacent foreshores and delta islands.

The Waterways Clean-Up forms part of the Clean Up the Peel Waterways program, a Friends of Rivers Peel initiative, supported by Alcoa and the Shire of Murray.

The Shire also supported the Dwellingup Community Compact and the Pinjarra Girl Guides with their Clean Up efforts.

Shire president Maree Reid said the council commended organisers and volunteers for their willingness to help with the clean-up.

“Litter is an ongoing concern in the district and we implore the wider population to follow the example of Clean-Up Australia Day participants and do their bit to keep our shire litter free,” she said.
